The metal supported thin film solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) structures incorporate thin film (>10 μm) electrolytes with an adjacent porous electrode. It provides an advantage as the low-resistance thin film, solid oxide electrolytes. The structure is fabricated utilizing the sputter deposition within an inexpensive perforated and encapsulated stainless steel foil forming a compound planar 3D SOFC structure.
Low Cost
- Thin film structure built on inexpensive stainless steel alloy foil utilizing roll-to-roll manufacturing process
- Low capital equipment with high throughput roll-to-roll process
Low Environmental Impact
- Traditional SOFC manufacturing process utilize highly toxic and carcinogenic binders that are abated during tape firing process.
- Our SOFC manufacturing process has no direct waste products, high temperature refractory metals and ceramics, recycled polymer, closed-loop tooling materials, internally recycled low-VOC solvent baths
Intermediate Temperature Operation
- Thin film configuration allow fuel cell to operate in the lower-cost intermediate temperature range (below 700°C).
- Significant advantage over bulk electrolyte systems
